Opatija is often called the "Nice of the Adriatic". It is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Croatia and a place with the longest tourist tradition on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. Opatija became an elite summer resort with a 12km-long promenade called Lungomare which goes from from Volosko via Opatija to Lovran. An equally impressive mountain path runs through the forested hills from Opatija to Veprinac and farther to Učka. Already in 1889 Opatija was declared the first climatic seaside resort on the Adriatic, which strengthened its position as the most fashionable tourist resort. Numerous tourists and owners of the villas contributed by planting exotic plants to the horticultural grandeur. Opatija was so attractive that, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, it was visited by the then most prominent personalities of the noble rank - Princess Luise von Sachsen Coburg, the Romanian King Charles I, the Swedish-Norwegian King Oscar and many others. Tourist development is Opatija's main feature even today. Favourable climate, well-maintained landscape, maintained beaches and lively entertainment throughout the year make this place one of the most elite summer resorts in Croatia today. The offer includes 20-odd hotels, a large number of catering establishments, sports and recreational facilities, and especially entertainment opportunities. A marina is open throughout the year. Many events in Opatija have a long tradition and offer a high-level entertainment such as: Carnival (January/February), International Yachting Regatta (in May), the Opatija Yachting Cup (in November). Opatija is also a national centre in which Porin, the prize for the best musical pieces is awarded (in March), as well as one of the most important congress centres in Croatia. Er wurde schnell ein elitärer Badeort und der Ferienort an sich. Die 12 km lange Meerespromenade "Lungomare", die sich von Volosko über Opatija nach Lovran erstreckte, wurde berühmt und zahlreiche Villen am Meer erbaut. Gleichzeitig wurde ein romantischer Höhenwanderweg durch den Wald von Veprinac bis nach Učka angelegt. Zur Pflanzenvielfalt in den prächtigen Parks trugen Villenbesitzer sowie Touristen mit Spenden exotischer Pflanzen aus der ganzen Welt bei. Opatija wurde so beliebt, dass am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts alle Prominenz von Rang und Nahmen zu Besuch kamen, von Prinzessin Luise von Sachsen-Koburg, über den Rumänischen König Karl der Erste bis hin zu dem Schwedisch-Norwegischen König Oskar und vielen anderen. Der Tourismus ist auch heute noch die Hauptbeschäftigungsquelle in Opatija. Das günstige Klima, die schönen Parks, die gepflegte Meerespromenade, das klare und reine Meereswasser, zahlreiche Badebuchten und viele Konferenzen und Kulturveranstaltungen im ganzen Jahr machen Opatija auch heute noch zu einem der gehobensten und schönsten Kur- und Ferienorte Kroatiens. Der Ort hat über 20 Hotels, eine Vielzahl an attraktiven Restaurants, Sport- und Freizeitmöglichkeiten sowie eine ganzjährig geöffnete Marina. Viele Veranstaltungen sind weit über Kroatiens Grenzen hinweg bekannt, der Karneval im Januar/Februar, die internationale Yacht-Regatte im Mai, der Opatija Yacht-Cup im November und natürlich die guten Restaurants!
